It’s the little things…
When Sam is losing his mind and the concept of reality is lost on him, it is Dean who grounds him. It is Dean alone who can ground him. “I thought I was with you!” Sam cries out when Dean walks in and his face says it all. It says, “That’s why I was calm and that’s why I thought it was real. Because it was you, Dean!”
Dean reaches out for Sam and grabs his injured hand. “This is real!” He says, “I was with you when you cut it! I sewed it up!” Sam begins to realize this is really his Dean as Dean continues, “This is different… I’m different!”
Sam knows this and he holds onto that to keep himself grounded in reality. He focuses on Dean’s voice and not on Lucifer’s in his head as Dean tells him, “I’m your flesh and blood, brother… you got away! We got you out, Sammy!”
It’s working! Lucifer is starting to fade the more he listens to Dean, his brother, his everything… and the one thing that has always been a constant in his life. The one person he can be himself around, the one man he trust his everything to. Lucifer is gone before long but it still warms Sam’s heart to hear Dean say to him, “Believe me, okay? You’ve gotta believe me! Make it stone number one and build on it! You understand?”
In that very moment, he starts to truly believe it will be okay. This man who loves him, this man who protects him, this man who needs him, has never failed him and never will. Dean is right… focusing on him will work because Dean is Sam’s constant; Dean is Sam’s rock, Dean is Sam’s heart, and Dean… Dean is Sam’s home.
